Short Commentary

One of the shorts I had a lot of fun making was ‘Bathroom Boogeyman’. While this isn’t a direct sequel to that (which I still want to do), I thought it has been a while since I’ve done a gross bathroom short. Having to use a public restroom is already very high on the list of things you shouldn’t spend your time doing, but what’s interesting about it is the variety of horrible experiences one can walk into. That makes the subject ripe for entertainment, because you can do small ideas to cosmic horror, and somehow if it’s placed in a public restroom, it makes sense.

While witnessing someone fighting for their life in a stall is a relatively mild experience, I thought it would be fun to add a bit of a seasonal flair for this one to see what jokes can be built on that basis. Sometimes the horror isn’t what happens to you personally, but what you see happening to others while you are powerless to help.

The Production

The production for this short was fairly straight forward. It relied on mostly pre-made assets (with some adjustments). The production for this wasn’t that notable. Since you could not see the main subject of the short (bathroom guy), the focus of his character acting was on his feet, and on the sound of his…bowels.

Gross.

Doing shorts where the focus of the production isn’t animation is a very interesting experience. I think sound design is something I want to get a lot better with, and shorts like this one gives me opportunity to hone that skill. It kind of reminds me of some projects I had to do back in college, where I had to tell a story using only sounds. You’d be amazed at what you could do with just audio. Perhaps that’s why one of the goals I had for this short was to really make it sound as gross as possible. In a way there are two stories: the one your eyes see, and the one your ears don’t want you to hear.
