Hardware + Software - I bought Moho

Intro

Back in February, Adobe made a large unforced error and decided that they will not be supporting their program, Adobe Animate (formerly Flash) anymore. While I don’t use Animate personally, they received huge pushback from their audience. I’ve got a lot of animosity to Adobe (which I hope to detail in a short one day), and it brought me great joy to see the fallout. Eventually they walked some of it back, and while there will be no new updates for the program, they mention the app will be on maintenance mode, better known as life support.

I’m no fan of adobe but when one door closes, another one opens. In the midst of Adobe’s fumbling, the Moho developers announced a sale of $100 off on their perpetual license, rigging based animation program. I had been interested in Moho for a while and last fall I was set to purchase it for about the same price but stepped back to save money for the holidays. Once this new opportunity presented itself, I figured it was a no brainer and it’d be better to buy it now and spend time learning it as opposed to not having it until it might be too late.

A lot of these creative companies have been operating in increasingly anti-customer ways. With Toonboom moving to exorbitant subscription pricing for their software, and Adobe sunsetting Animate, the opportunity to jump on an animation program with perpetual licensing, that does rigging is a move that will ensure my being able to continually deliver shorts into the future. I will always try to support pro-consumer corps and good products. It’s important to reward good behavior, especially when the temptation to be evil can be so strong.

I’ve just finished up my freelance gig, and over the next few weeks I’m going to invest a lot of time in learning Moho so I can incorporate it into my production pipeline. I’m excited to see what it can do and the new possibilities that will open up for me with its use. I’ll write more about Moho later on as I learn the program, but that’s all for now.

-Until next time-
