Short Commentary

Early on when making the β€˜Giggle Gang’ shorts, I used funny meme videos from TikTok as a source for inspiration or a base for the content. After a few years, the β€˜Giggle Gang’ transitioned into what it is now (original shorts), however I still had a large library of meme videos I would eventually like to animate. They make for good content and they’re really quick to produce so having a few of these in the line-up for the year helps a lot. The goal was to make use of that meme library so I always have a source of content to animate. The best way I figured I could keep this type of content was via my β€˜Post Processing’ series.

β€˜Post Processing’ is perfect for these videos because it was initially made as a way to animate funny posts from β€˜X’ (formerly twitter). The characters in this series are  NPCs (non-player characters) in design so they’re meant to not have any unique identities (this also allows them to appear in β€˜Moment of My Time’ and β€˜Giggle Gang’ shorts) so that means there’s no chance of them evolving personalities like in the case of the β€˜Giggle Gang’ characters. This allows β€˜Post Processing’ to be my main platform for animating popular memes and jokes - regardless of the source of the media, no matter the platform.

Production Commentary

Aside from expanding the range of shorts that can be made in the β€˜Post Processing’ series, there wasn’t much in the way of new things that appeared in this short. That said the most interesting aspect of the production was also the most difficult for this one. I had wanted to learn how to better use the particle nodes in Toonboom, and I figured this would be a good time because the rest of the short was easy to make. Unfortunately I came away far more confused by the particle system than I was before using it and eventually resorted to using the particle generator in After Effects. Eventually I’ll be able to produce particles in Toonboom more easily, but I have a lot of studying to do before I’m comfortable with it.

Usually β€˜Post Processing’ shorts have very limited or no backgrounds, so giving this project a more complete production was fun to do. I don’t really have a consistent idea over which shorts should have full backgrounds and which ones should not. It usually comes down to if a background will add to the joke, or if it won’t slow down the production. In this case I figured in order to punch-up the joke, I would need to have the characters be in a setting so that I could do more than just lip-sync.

Even though the short was simple and almost painless to produce, I did enjoy making this one and I think the final result is fun to watch. It helps a lot that the source video is hilarious.
